Blogging Basics: Paying Attention to Your Demographics is Critical

Welcome back for part 16 of the Blogging Basics Series! It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted a series due to life stuff and other mundane things not worth exploring, but I’m back today!

I’m sharing blogging tips from A-Z based on my own experiences (the good, bad, and ugly), because I love bloggers and want to give something back to them.

Now for the topic of the day:

P is for Paying Attention to Demographics is Critical

Paying attention to demographics can make or break your blog success.

Demographics: Statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it.

As this pertains to blogging, it is vital to know the types of people reading your blog. Unless you’re blogging solely for your own pleasure, knowledge of demographics is critical to blogging and marketing success online.

Why are demographics so critical?

Identifying your main audience will give you direction in your blogging and further enhance your readership, leading to more comments and subscriptions. Often your blogging “voice” will attract a certain type of reader, and if you’re not sure who they are, you won’t know how to write as well for them. Also, you’ll be able to determine if the people you attract are the type of readers you ultimately want, and if they’re not, identifying demographics will help you make key changes in your marketing strategy (if, of course, this is one of your blogging goals).

There are several tools available to help you figure out the age, gender, location, and other pertinent statistics of your readers, and here are just a few that many bloggers have found to be helpful–including me.

1. Quantcast

Quantcast is probably one of the most comprehensive demographic tools available, identifying everything about your readers to gender, location, and even business interests. It’s a tool utilized by millions of websites and one of the most important to use for serious bloggers.

2. Google Analytics

Most people identify Google Analytics as being a great resource for measuring traffic to your website or blog, but it is also a valuable source to help identify the types of readers you attract in great detail. You can find out who they are, what they like, what they don’t like, and where they enter and leave. This will give you a better idea of which content is most enjoyable to your readers.

3. Alexa

Not only does Alexa assign worldwide rankings to websites, it also provides statistical data on the types of readers your blog attracts. It is a little more vague than Quantcast and Google Analytics, but it can be helpful when you’re trying to identify your audience–particularly in terms of regions, age, and gender.

There are plenty of other tools available to identify the demographics of your blog, but I propose you use a combination of all of them that seem valuable, because there is not one foolproof source. This will enable you to customize your marketing plan or simply write more entertaining posts for readers who will appreciate them.

In order to further understand demographics, I thought I’d share this really awesome video which explains it in more detail. It might help clarify anything you might be confused about or answer questions not resolved within this post.
